Text “Shopping”

Going shopping is a considerable part of our life, especially of women. Due to a great number and variety of shops, it is not a problem nowadays to buy this or that thing, but the real thing is to have enough money to acquire what you wish.

There are many kinds of shops in every town or city, but most of them have a food supermarket, a department store, men’s and women’s clothing stores, a grocery, a butchery and a bakery.

I like to do shopping at a big department stores and supermarket. They sell various goods under one roof and this is very convenient.

A department store, for example, true to its name, is composed of many departments: electric appliances, cosmetics, ready- made clothes, textiles, shoes, sport goods, toys, china and glass, linen, curtains, cameras, records. You can buy everything you like there. There are also escalators in big stores which take customers to different floors.

The things for sale are on the counters so that they can be easy seen. In women’s clothing department you can find dresses, costumes, blouses, skirts, coats, beautiful underwear and many other things to strengthen your wardrobes.

In the men’s clothing department you can choose suits, trousers, overcoats, ties either for everyday wear or for special occasions. In the knitwear department one can buy sweaters, cardigans, short- sleeved pullovers, woollen jackets. In the perfumery they sell face creams and powder, lipstick, lotions and shampoos.

In a food supermarket we can also buy many different things at once: sausages, fish, sugar, macaroni, flour, cereals, and tea. At the butcher’s there is a wide choice of meat and poultry. At the bakery you buy brown and white bread, rolls, biscuits.

Another shop we frequently go to is the greengrocery which is stocked by cabbage, potatoes, onions, cucumbers, carrots and so on. Everything is sold here ready – weighed and packed. If you call round at a dairy you are sure to buy milk, cream, cheese, butter and many other products.

The method of shopping may vary. It may be a self- service shop where the customer goes from counter to counter selecting and putting into a basket what he wishes to buy. Then he takes the basket to the checkout counter, where the prices of the purchases are added up. If it is not a self- service shop, and most small shop assistant helps the customer in finding what he wants. You pay money to the cashier and he gives you back the change.

Of all the shops in Tomsk I prefer to visit Tomterra Market. I like the service there: the shopgirls are all the attention and care for the customer. Besides there is a wide choice of different goods there: knitted wear, jewellery, toys and perfume. One can buy a wide assortment of shirts, blouses, ready – made suits and dresses. In the opposite hall there are counters with confectionery and cans on sale. Thus anyone can find here anything to his liking. What you need for household can be bought in our well- known shop which has the name “1000 Trifles”. It is situated in the centre of the city which is very convenient for people.

Shops in Britain.

Most shops in Britain open at 9.00 a.m. and close at 5.00 or 5.30 in the evening.

Small shops usually close for an hour at lunch time. On one or two days a week- usually Thursday/ Friday some large food shops stay open until about 8.00 p.m. for late night shopping.

Many shops are closed in the afternoon on one day a week. The day is usually Wednesday or Thursday and it is a different day in different towns. Nearly all shops are closed on Sundays. Newspaper shops are open in the morning and sell sweets and cigarettes as well. But there are legal restrictions on selling many things on Sunday.

In general, overseas visitors don’t have much difficulty knowing where to buy things. Most shops sell the things that you would not expect them to. One problem is stamps. In Great Britain you can only buy these at post- offices.

Many large food shops (supermarkets) are self- service. When you go into one of the shops you take a basket and you put the things you wish to buy into it.

You queue up cash –desk and pay for everything just before you leave.

If someone tries to make things from a shop without paying money are almost certain to be caught. Most shops have store detectives who have the job catching shoplifters. Shoplifting is considered a serious crime by the police and the courts.

When you are waiting to be served in a shop it is important to wait your turn.

It is important not to try to be served before people who arrived before you. Many people from overseas are astonished at the British habit of queueing.

  1. Are there any differences between shops in Britain and in your country?

  2. Which do you think is better, a small shop with personal service or a big self- service shop?
